Short sleep duration predicts an increased risk of being overweight / obese in adults. Chaput and colleagues suggest that there may be optimal sleeping hours at which body weight is regulated. They found that short sleep duration reduced the level of circulating leptin compared to that predicted by fat mass. Read the paper for free to find out more about these findings.
Highlights
Gender affects stress eating behavior in mice. Evaluating the impact of gender and stress on food-seeking behavior, Diana Pankevich and Tracy Bale found that under conditions of stress female mice more frequently sought out a preferred higher-calorie food than males. See the article for details.
Scholastic Achievement and Overweight. A study conducted by Shore et al. has observed an association between overweight and decreased scholastic achievement in middle school students. In addition to more absences and detentions, overweight students tended to have lower GPAs and reading scores than their nonoverweight peers. See the article for details.
